Smart Medicines has won the InovCapital Award (5,000 Euros upon company creation). The project describes the development of an Intelligent Nanomedicine, carried out at the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra.
This project relies on the specific targeting of a drug to cancer cells, without affecting healthy tissues, because “the target cells show the perfect combination for the developed system”. “The carrier only recognizes those cells (without reaching the healthy ones), releasing the transported drug only where it is needed”, as one of the team researchers, Vera Moura, explains. The main benefits are minimum adverse secondary effects, decrease of therapeutic failure and tumor reduction.
